On Tuesday 15th January 2013, Guardian Wealth Management Frankfurt hosted their first seminar, “An Evening with Paul Temperton” in the Kempinski Hotel, Gravenbruch, Frankfurt.

Paul Temperton has over three decades of experience in the financial services, having acted as an economist with the Bank of England as well as being a prolific author and economic commentator. As one of Europe’s eminent economists, Paul’s attendance created an air of excitement in Frankfurt’s international and domestic community, which channelled into a vibrant, informative and highly enjoyable evening. Paul’s presentation on the global economic situation granted a degree of expertise delivered in his trademark charismatic and easily digestible style.

Speaking alongside Paul, Leighton Jones, Regional Director, Guardian Wealth Management, contextualised Guardian within the subject matter, clarifying how Guardian’s services and products can help internationals to achieve their long-term goals and secure a bright future.

It seems that many UK ex-pats often make the mistake of assuming that inheritance tax will not apply to any lump sums left in pensions after death. Although Inheritance tax does not apply to UK pensions, (it applies to other inherited assets) many people are unaware that another tax is applied upon death; Lump Sum Death Benefit Tax and that this tax can be as high as 55%!

Inheritance tax and Lump Sum Death Benefit tax are not the same, although they share similarities. With standard UK personal pensions, if the member dies before taking a retirement income, or before the age of 75, no tax is due. On death after retirement, a spouse or financial dependant may be able to continue drawing a pension income, but if a lump sum is left to beneficiaries after retirement or after the age of 75, the Lump Sum Death Benefit tax of 55% would apply – although this is deducted at source by the Scheme Administrators.

Whilst UK based pension schemes fall under UK regulations and UK taxation, a Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS) is an overseas pension scheme. Transferring a UK pension fund to a QROPS scheme, for those who are retiring abroad, may be beneficial and more tax efficient.. It’s a great scheme with some outstanding benefits, but with strict HMRC qualifying criteria and with around 2,000 QROPS schemes currently available, choosing the right one for you can be daunting.

Although not falling under UK regulations and UK taxation, a QROPS must meet with certain HMRC requirements, one such benefit is that under certain conditions, is that the whole pension pot can be passed free of tax to beneficiaries of your choosing.

With a QROPS there is also no tax due if the member dies before taking a retirement income. However after retirement, as long as the member has been a non-UK resident for 5 complete tax years, there will also be no Lump Sum Death Benefit tax due (depending on the QROPS jurisdiction). So for certain QROPS members, even after taking a retirement income and as long as they have been living outside of the UK for 5 or more tax years, their pension pot will not be subject to the 55% Lump Sum Death Benefit tax.

If however death occurs before the full five year period, then the 55% tax may be due or if for whatever reason a QROPS holder decides to return to the UK, their pension will revert back to UK regulations.
A major benefit for any QROPS holders returning to the UK is that the 55% Lump Sum Death Benefit tax would usually be calculated from the value at the time the UK pension was initially transferred to the QROPS, so any growth achieved would not be subject to UK tax. The issue of taxation and how it relates to QROPS is complicated.

The Institute of Fiscal Studies (IFS), issued a report stating that many over 50’s are not adequately prepared for retirement and may feel short changed when converting their pension into an annuity due to the low annuity rates on offer.

The report indicated that women’s life expectancy has reached 88 years but many are under predicting by around 4 years, while men are under predicting by around two years to 83 years instead of the national projection of 85 years. This may leave many without enough savings or a large enough pension pot to cover their retirement.

“Fortunately, people are going to live longer than they think, but they are not planning for it, so they might find their savings and pension do not stretch far enough,” said Joanne Segars, Chief Executive of the NAPF.

Joanne also said “The report calculated that one in four may have to add at least £60,000 to their pension pot before retirement, in order to meet their expectations.”

So without delay why not conduct a health check on your finances, our financial consultants are available to help you regarding your current pension and will ensure you make the most of your savings pot.

Chief executive of Guardian Wealth Management, David Howell joins a host of business and sporting dragons in a nine-day charity expedition across Tanzania.

The challenge, run by The Dore Foundation and Engage in their future association, has offered eight students with complex emotional issues a once in a lifetime opportunity to trek across the floor of the Great Rift Valley, starting from the sacred Mount Longido and ending at the stunning Crater Highlands and Ngorongoro Crater.

The group will be greeted with a meal prepared by award-winning celebrity chef Antony Worrall Thompson on their final day.

David said: “I am thrilled to be taking part in such a life-changing event. Over the years, The Dore Foundation has helped thousands of people transform their lives through a drug-free programme of practical activities, while Engage in their future continuously seeks to improve life chances for children with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties.

“There is no doubt that this will be a challenging and testing expedition but it will allow the children to discover the depths and reality of their abilities and commitment. They will be joined by sporting prodigies and mentors who will act as both help and inspiration.”

David will be joined by former Royal Marine Commando Alan Chambers MBE, Dr Ed Coats, who joined James Cracknell and Ben Fogel in the race to the South Pole, Jeremy Game of the Celebrity Kilimanjaro climb and Trystan Williams, as well as seven business / sporting mentors and six Maasai guides.

“The Extreme Classroom” concept was devised and developed by Trystan Williams, Springfields Academy Principle and Jon Hamp, Vice Principal in the belief that “only by challenging students will they exceed expectations.”

A documentary by the BBC will record the highs and lows as candidates from schools within the Engage network endure the rigorous selection process.

There’s lots to think of if you’re taking into consideration a move abroad; you will need to investigate your intended destination, consider your long-term strategy and organise critical safety measures that include medical cover or life assurance.

If your living abroad adventure is taking you from the UK to a further country within the European Economic Location, your move should be fairly straightforward with regards to the legalities. If you are planning on moving to a further destination, you might want to make contact with either the British Embassy or the embassy for the country you are thinking of moving to just before you start generating any plans.

Living abroad – think before you take the plunge

Living abroad does not need to be a massive headache, but it does demand investigation. It’s best to be certain that you take a look at your intended new home at the very least once to be certain that you are following the right option. Also make sure you take a look into any related laws or customs, and take into account your spending budget and the possible currency fluctuations carefully.

If you are used to cost-free medical care, such as the NHS inside the UK, ensure that you are conscious of how the corresponding care system functions in your new country. Benefit systems, pensions and help for widows and dependents may well also differ from country to country should anything happen to you when living abroad – so organise your life assurance to ensure you will be covered in the new country, the best thing to do is to seek advice by means of an International Financial Adviser who understands your new destination. If you will be living abroad with young kids, make sure you investigate the education options as well.

As soon as you’re living abroad, what else ought you to take into consideration?

As soon as you’ve arrived in your new country, you could possibly need to apply for a residence permit and/or register with the neighborhood authorities. You should also register with your nearby embassy and organise any ID documents that you may require – you could even need to make adjustments to your driver’s license for those who intend to get or hire an automobile. If you are moving within the EEA, you might be able to organise a non-resident bank account as soon as you get there, with the alternative to upgrade to a regular bank account as soon as your residence permit has been acquired.

For those who haven’t already organised that very important life assurance, then now may be the time to do it; you ought to be able to obtain expat financial advisors in your region, or simply use a nearby service if you’re confident that they’re regulated and bona fide. If you haven’t done so ahead of the move, you should also make a will, and on a more personal level, try and find out the neighborhood language in order that you can fit in as well as possible with your new community.

Our advisors here at Guardian Wealth Management have a lot of firsthand experience of your challenges you face when living abroad – a lot of of our advisors are living as expats, so we totally realise how you really feel and also are aware of the things you need to think about. With advisors all over the world, we are able to make it easier to organise your pensions, life assurance and wills, as well as coping with matters like inheritance tax. So no matter whether you’re just thinking about living abroad, or you’ve currently on the move, feel totally free to speak to us at any time for some accurate and friendly advice.

If you’re keen on financial planning and you’re continually on the lookout for distinct ways to try to develop your wealth, you could possibly have encountered the term spread trading. Spread trading allows individuals an opportunity to speculate on different monetary markets and it’s absolutely tax free.

The activity when spread trading is usually the selection of one of two factors; you could place an up bet or possibly a down bet. An up bet is also recognised as a long position or alternatively, a buy – and you will place an up bet should you think that a commodity or share will rise in value. Conversely, a down bet, sell or short position is placed if you happen to think that it will fall in value. Ultimately, you’re not acquiring a share, but rather betting on its value movement.

Spread trading – what’s the risk?

Spread trading can be a terrific way to help your other techniques of financial planning, but it’s surely not without its risks. In effect, you are gambling with your own revenue, so it tends to make sense to ease oneself into it steadily.

Each time you wish to place a bet, you should consider what level of risk you’re prepared to take. You then need to pick a sum to bet per point, which might be anything from a pound upwards.

You will also need to determine whether you desire to place your bet on a daily, rolling or contract month basis.

Choosing the length of the spread trading bet

If you pick a daily bet, it’ll automatically be closed at the end of the trading day, should you have not closed it manually before this shut-off point. You should spend more if you wish to place a rolling bet, which will continue to stay active for the next day of trading. If you choose to place a contract month bet, it’ll last for anything up to a three month period, closing on a predetermined day.

This really is just a brief look into the principal terms and idea behind spread trading; if you’d like some more detailed information then check out guardianspreadtrading.com where full explanations are covered and you could practice on the demo website without any risk.
